From the desk

Why packaging research matters before the PO.

Most packaging mistakes get caught on the second order, not the first. The print didn’t hold, the seal didn’t close clean, the material out-cost the margin. By then the run is committed.

This desk exists because none of that should be a surprise. The research is boring and the comparisons are slow — that’s why most blogs skip them. We don’t.

Buyer FAQ

Questions buyers email us most.

  • What’s the smallest order most packaging suppliers will run?

Stock-shape MOQs start around 500-1000 units. Custom-print or custom-form MOQs are usually 3,000+ per SKU, often 10,000 for thermoforms.

  • How long does a typical custom-print run take?

3-6 weeks from approved artwork, depending on material. Glass and aluminium run longer (5-8 weeks). Plates ship a week before press; build that into the timeline.

  • Is bioplastic actually compostable?

Industrially compostable, yes (at certified facilities). Home-compostable in 12-24 months only for a small subset. Always check the BPI or TUV certification, not the marketing claim.

  • How do I get accurate quotes from multiple suppliers?

Send the same spec sheet to every vendor — material, dimensions, finish, print colours (Pantone), tolerance, and target MOQ. Differences in their replies tell you who’s actually equipped for your run.

  • Are recycled materials always cheaper?

No. Recycled HDPE often costs more than virgin, and recycled PET runs at parity. The cost savings show up in brand-positioning and reduced disposal fees, not the unit cost.

  • Do you take affiliate or sponsorship money?

No. The desk is reader-funded. If a piece is sponsored we say so at the top, and we don’t accept paid placement in comparison tables.
